A neuropsychological assessment can provide or clarify a diagnosis when an individual is experiencing cognitive, neuropsychiatric or behavioural symptoms or issues. They can be used to identify cognitive deficits, learning disabilities, giftedness in high functioning adults, and identify an individual’s learning strengths and weaknesses.
Assessments following sports-injuries, i.e. concussions, can be useful to clarify diagnosis, to make recommendations for rehabilitation, and to help determine a safe return-to-play.
Why are neuropsychological assessments important and useful?
Neuropsychological assessments can contribute to clinical decisions about:
Diagnosis and prognosis
Rehabilitation planning, including recommendations for other types of services, e.g. Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, or Psychology.
Ability to return to play after a sports-injury
Ability to return work or school and the relevant accommodations
Ability to function independently
Tracking of changes in cognitive abilities over time to determine response to medication or disease progression
